Youth Unemployment: A Challenge for Thailand

I, like other concerned Thai citizens, have a big worry ---- I am worried about the many problems our teens or youths are facing. One of the problems is that many of them are not employed. So many of them have been ignored by Thai society. Many of them have turned their attention to nonsensical activitis such as dare-devil racing at night, prostitution, and drugs. ithout job security, they often waste their energy and enthusism doing something else. Moreover, they are often preyed upon by unscrupulous operators and traders of human misery.

On this blog, I argue that youth unemployemt is a big problem Thailand is facing and this has resulted in many social problems related to Thai teenagers. I suggest the Thai government do something about it. Education is not the silver bullet, a magic spell that cal solve this problem. I also argue that one of the best ways to deal with youth problems is to create suitable jobs for them.

In the Thai context, youth or เยาวชน in Thai refers to persons who are between 14-18 yeras old. For the UN, the youth refers to those who are between 15-25 yeras old.

I remember a Thai saying 'The children today are the adults of tomorrow. We all agree with this. Any civilized society would spend a great deal of energy and resources on children and youth development.

The importance of youth employment has been stated on the website of the international labor organization or ILO.

Many young people are in education or employed in decent jobs… Unfortunately, there are also too many young workers who do not have access to decent work. A significant number of youth are underemployed, unemployed, seeking employment or between jobs, or working unacceptably long hours under informal, intermittent and insecure work arrangements…

On the same website, the potential problems resulting from the high figure of youth umemployment has also been mentioned as follows:

It is....

Youth unemployment and underemployment impose heavy social and economic costs, resulting in the loss of opportunities for economic growth… and unutilized
investment in education and training...

Below are some of the common youth problems Thai society is facing:

1. Young people believe that sex before marriage is acceptable and allows couples to get to know each other before they live together, according to a survey by Suan Dusit Poll. (January 2003)

2. More secondary school and university students have joined the flesh trade during the long summer school holidays, a university lecturer has found in a survey.

3. Director of the Education Ministry's Student Patrol Division, Nikhom Jarumanee, yesterday cited police records as showing that about 30 soccer bookmakers were arrested in different areas across Bangkok during recent European tournaments and many of their customers were found to be students

A message on youth delivered from the UN on 12 August 2009, the International Youth Day, has pointed out that the mojority of persons who were unemployed were the youth.

Our world faces multiple, interconnected crises with severe and far-reaching
impacts that fall disproportionately on the young. In 2007, for example, youth
comprised 25 per cent of the world’s working age population yet accounted for 40
per cent of the unemployed. The global economic downturn means that, in the near term, youth unemployment will continue to climb. Unemployment rates tell only part of the story, especially for the vast majority of youth who live in developing countries. For them, informal, insecure and low-wage employment is the norm, not the exception.

  1. The estimated population of Thailand, according to the UN, is 64 million of which approximately 9.3 million live in Bangkok and its vicinities.
  2. The fact that the present government (Abhisit 1) has put more emphasis on developing Thai citizens as a whole is a welcoming sign. But there are more things to be done.

Thai youths are our future. they are not just a factor for production. They are our assets.

Pha Taem: The Prehistoric Land

Have you ever heard of the name 'Pha Taem'? Most of you, I am sure. would say 'Yes'. Some of you may say 'No.' As a matter of fact, Pha Taem is not a new word for most Thais. From the media, we know that it is a place where we can observe the first sunrise and the first sunset in Thailand and the place where there are several prehistoric rock paintings. Moreover, it's a place of wonderful scenery of the Mekhong River and the fresh air. Indeed, Pha Taem is another wonderful place in Thailand.

The above photo shows some paintings found on the rock at Pha Taem. They attract a lot of visitors. I have seen them on TV and other media such newspapers and books. I had a wish -- One day I would have a chance to see the real things. I did have the chance and took it. I decided to visit Pha Taem on the 2nd of January 2010.

Getting to Pha Taem is easy if you have a car. Public transport is quite convenient. From Bangkok, you can take a bus to Khong Jiam, a small district in Ubon Ratchathani province. How far is it from Bangkok? I'd say several hundreds kilometers.

From Ubon Ratchathani, I drove across the Moon River to Amphur Warin Chamrab. This small district is very close to the province. It's only about five kilometers from Ubon. From this district, I continued driving to another twon called Piboon Mungsaharn, which is about 35 kilometers from Warin Chamrab. From Piboon, I drove to Khong Jiam, a district where I stayed overnight.

Historical Significance of Pha Taem

Pha Taem is a compound term consisting of two words: Pa and Taem. Pa means cliff and taem means painted, so together we have the meaning 'the cliff that has been painted'. Pha Taem is important for its collection of prehistoric rock paintings which are over 3,000 years old. These paintings stretch along some 1,500 meters of rock and are the finest prehistoric rock paintings in Thailand. The subjects painted include, animals, human hands, human like figures, hunting scenes and fish.

Geographical Significance of Pha Taem

Pataem is also recognized as the location where you can observe the first sunrise and sunset in the kingdom of Thailand.

The above photo shows the sign saying that Pha Taem is where we can observe the first sunset in Siam.

We arrived at Ubon around midday on the 1st of January, 2010. We decided to drive to Khongjiam.

Prehistoric people were believed to have been living around the area --- 3000-4000 years ago.

What I really liked about it was the air; it was clean and clear. It was not too cold or too warm. It's just right.

There are a few things on earth, for me, I consider more enchanting than sipping coffee and standing on the cliff waiting for the first sunrise of the day.

Spiritual Significance of Pha Taem

Why Pha Taem? You may ask me why I took a great deal of effort to witness the first sunrise over the cliff. My simplest answer is that one needs, every now and then, to enrich one's spiritual quality. The feeling of being the first to experience something as significant as the first sunrise in Thailand is hard to put into words. You have to experience it yourself.

Being on the cliff and looking down the river basin of Mekhong, and looking over the hills and mountains of another country (Laos) can bring us joy. The joy of being in this wonderful world, the joy of being able to witness the feeling of being alive and being one with the earth. Looking at the world from the top of the cliff brought me a sense of time. I was actually looking into the history. The land as ancient as the earth itself is here right before our eyes. We know that beauty is real when so many people are witnessing it.

Another aspect I would like to share is the fact that Pha Taem alone is just a cliff. What makes it more amazing is its surroundings, the mountains and hills to the east are not in Thailand. They are in the Republic of Laos. The Mekhong is infact an international river for several peoples. This is something to remind us that nature is about oneness. The wonder of nature is greater than what humans have imagned it to be. Precisely, this is teh main reason why we should experience the beauty of nature.

แต้มอดีต ปัจจุบัน แต้มวันใหม่
ธรรมชาติ อัศจรรย์ ความเป็นไป
แต้มเอาไว้ ตราบนิจ นิรันดร

In summary, Pha Taem is not a big cliff with rock paitings of prehistoric people. It is a wonderful place, a place of natural wonder, a place with fresh air and amazing acenery. Every morning, there are a lot of people who are happy to wake up very early to witness the first sunrise of the day.

I was luckly to have a chance to experience the moment when the sun made its way to the sky of Thailand. I was just one of the many people who have had such the experience. I shall never forget this experience. How about you? Would you like to experience the feeling of being the first and the feeling of being one with Time? If your answer is positive, then .... welcome to Pa Taem.
